Family as Faculty provides real families
a voice in educator preparation programs through heartfelt stories
with constructive messages. We seek to enhance student achievement
by enabling future educators to develop skills to collaborate effectively
with families. The Family as Faculty Project in SW Florida:
- Offers pre-service and in-service teachers the opportunity
to hear first hand from the family perspective
- Affords current and future educators interactions with and
learning from the experiences of families
- Addresses accomplished educator competencies related to family
involvement
- Strengthens the family and educator roles as collaborative
partners in education
The Family as Faculty Program recruits
family members representing students of diverse cultures, ages,
and learning needs. The program trains the family members to select
and deliver an important message to educators. A key component of
the training is to enable the development of an effective presentation.
The family member is supported to select from their personal history
a story which best offers a learning opportunity for the future
educator.
Upon request, a family speaker is contacted and scheduled
to present. The Family Faculty Member will deliver a 20 to 30 minute
presentation, with additional time for questions and answers. Faculty
members are responsible for supporting the family member in the
role of visiting faculty, preparing students for the presentation,
facilitating the follow up discussion and distributing and returning
program forms. |
